Hurricanes Florence And Michael Highlight Monster Storms' Devastating Differences

A restaurant fixture known as "Big Gus" is seen damaged by Hurricane Michael in Panama City Beach.

Florida's Panhandle is one huge disaster zone after Hurricane Michael made landfall Wednesday.

Hurricane Michael, the third-most powerful ever to strike the United States mainland, battered Florida's Gulf coast before it was downgraded to a tropical storm as it headed through Georgia.

Hurricane Michael has weakened to a Category 1 storm, but is still a unsafe rainmaker as it travels across Georgia. I don't know where they are.

Moist air, warm waters in the Gulf of Mexico, and ideal wind patterns supercharged Hurricane Michael in the hours before it smacked Florida's Panhandle. Interstate 10 was closed west of Tallahassee.

"North Carolina is staring down another powerful hurricane less than a month (after) Hurricane Florence battered our state", Cooper said at a news conference, The News & Observer reported.

As the storm came ashore Wednesday, tornado risks grew, with warnings issued as far south as Sarasota County.

Richard Fausset of The New York Times said the winds were so intense that it felt like a California natural disaster.

Jerry Nelson, born and raised outside Panama City, was stunned at the destruction. "We thought the windows were going to break at any time", Beu said.

Brock Long, the head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), said many Florida buildings were not built to withstand a storm above the strength of a Category 3 hurricane.

More than 500,000 homes and businesses in Florida, Georgia and Alabama have been left without power as the storm moves north east before ending up in the Atlantic by Friday.

"I'm anxious about my daughter and grandbaby".

More than 375,000 people up and down the Gulf Coast were urged to evacuate as Michael closed in. It was heading north-northeast at 14 miles per hour (22 kph) with maximum sustained winds down to 150 miles per hour, the hurricane center said. It strengthened from a tropical storm on Sunday to a Category 1 hurricane with 75-mph winds on Monday.

Only the so-called Labor Day hurricane of 1935 in the Florida Keys (892 millibars) and Hurricane Camille on the Mississippi Gulf Coast in 1969 (900 millibars) were more intense.

Gov. Rick Scott announced afterward that thousands of law enforcement officers, utility crews and search and rescue teams would now go into recovery mode.

Meteorologists watched satellite imagery in complete awe as the storm intensified, with experts saying it is the worst ever recorded in the region.

Members of the Florida National Guard chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear defense (CBRN) Enhanced Response Force Package prepare to help citizens in affected areas prior to landfall of Hurricane Michael at Camp Blanding Joint Training Center near Starke, Fla., on October 9, 2018. "I mean, literally, we follow it right in".

Hargan, a bartender at a riverfront restaurant, feared he would lose his home and his job to the storm.

Numerous buildings in Panama City were demolished or left without roofs amid deserted streets littered with debris, twisted, fallen tree trunks and dangling wires. Hundreds of military families were moved out, and the base's aircraft, which include F-22 Raptors, were flown to safety hundreds of miles away. "I'm freakin' scared I'm going to lose everything I own, man".
