What Latest Assessment On Global Warming Means for Southern Africa

According to a United Nations scientific panel on climate change, if world leaders, corporations and citizens don't unite and radically transform their behaviors regarding our planet, doomsday will be on our doorstep.

The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change says there will be irreversible changes and the entire loss of some ecosystems if the world doesn't take immediate and intensive action to cut greenhouse gas emissions far more than is occurring now.

" Others face a clear choice: either they support targets which are in line with the 1.5 degrees Paris Agreement goal, or they condemn us to truly devastating climate impact", Mr Trio said. For instance, by 2100, the global sea level rise would be 10cm lower with global warming of 1.5ºC compared with 2ºC.

Although coal production in the USA increased slightly in 2017 after years of punishing loses, 2018 is shaping up to show more declines according to the Energy Department's most recent Quarterly Coal Report.

McCormack said he recognizes the concerns laid out in the IPCC report.

The Senate GOP majority, likely to remain in effect after November's elections, is dominated by lawmakers skeptical of human-caused climate change, such as Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.).

Diana Liverman, Professor of Geography and Development, University of Arizona, and one of the authors on the IPCC special report on "Global Warming of 1.5 °C".

To limit warming to the lower temperature goal, the world needs "rapid and far-reaching" changes in energy systems, land use, city and industrial design, transportation and building use, the report said. Roger Wicker (R-Miss.), a climate change skeptic, said of the actions urged by the report.

Wendel Trio, director of CAN Europe, one of the signatories, said: "The sooner and the more we invest in the clean energy transition, the better for citizens and our economies".

Even Germany, which advocated for a slower approach to protect auto-manufacturing jobs, argued for a 30-percent reduction from 2021 levels by 2030, according to a Reuters report. Global net emissions of carbon dioxide would need to fall by 45 per cent from 2010 levels by 2030, and reach "net zero" around 2050. Politicians are fond of talking about what kind of future we will leave our grandchildren, but I can now say that having a grandchild sharpens that perspective dramatically.

Yet, we're seeing more violent storms and more severe hurricanes - which the administration denies are related to climate change (and which are costing us billions in taxpayer rebuilding funds), we're seeing more sea-level flooding in Miami and other low coastal areas; we're seeing worldwide increases in population and the scattered scramble for clean water as starvation and drought rise around the globe. He said he'll certainly consider what the IPCC report has to say.

She then said the call to phase out coal power by 2050 was "drawing a very long bow", casting doubt on the expertise of the world's leading climate scientists. We ask that any comments by climate-change denialists be flagged for moderation.

Under former Gov. Bill Richardson, the state of New Mexico undertook some climate initiatives, trying to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from industries and studying how the impacts of warming would affect resources and its communities.

Trump, who has previously called climate change a "hoax", was speaking on the White House lawn on Tuesday when he said the report "was given to me".

"I'm anxious for kids and grandkids", says MTSU Sophomore Samantha Campbell when discussing her views on climate change in Murfreesboro, Tenn., on Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2018.
