WHAT'S HAPPENING: Historic Hurricane Michael hits Florida

Hurricane Michael, which made landfall near Mexico Beach, Florida as a category-4 storm on Wednesday afternoon, has ravaged the Florida Panhandle with gusting winds of up to 155mph (250kph).

As the Category 4 storm's center crossed nearby, Mulligan said, the concrete building shook and vibrated against sustained winds around 155 miles per hour.

State officials issued disaster declarations in Alabama and Georgia and the storm is also expected to bring heavy rainfall to North and SC.

"We've been very cautious with sending our first responders out right now", she said, after Michael made landfall as a raging Category 4 hurricane that toppled trees and power lines.

Across the bay in Panama City Beach, a resort city on the Gulf of Mexico known for its white-sand beach and amusement parks, winds of about 100 miles per hour furiously whipped the trees in the early afternoon and pulled apart homes. "We have trees being uprooted, heavy, heavy rain".

This doesn't necessarily change the forecast for our area, as we dodge areas of rain through Thursday with localized flooding possible and gusty winds at times through Friday morning.

Hurricane Michael slammed into the Florida Panhandle with terrifying winds of 155 miles per hour Wednesday, splintering homes and submerging neighborhoods before continuing its destructive charge inland across the Southeast.

In Panama City Beach, a building that was still under construction didn't stand a chance against Michael.

Only the 1935 "Labor Day" hurricane, which hit the Florida Keys, and 1969's Hurricane Camille, which struck MS, were more intense at landfall in all of USA history.

"It feels like you don't know when the next tree is going to fall on top of you because its blowing so ferociously", he said by telephone.

Up the coast in Pensacola, the water temperature is 82 degrees Fahrenheit (28 degrees Celsius) - 8 degrees Fahrenheit (4.4 degrees Celsius) higher than normal for this time of year. The National Hurricane Center says Hurricane Leslie and Tropical Storm Nadine are no threat to land over the open Atlantic Ocean, but Tropical Storm Sergio is expected to hit Mexico's Baja California Peninsula later this week and threaten the southern U.S. Plains and the Ozarks by the weekend.

By Wednesday night, more than 403,000 homes and businesses were without electricity in Florida, Georgia and Alabama, utility companies said.

"This happened so quickly, we weren't exactly prepared", he said.

On the forecast track, the core of Michael will move inland across the Florida Panhandle this afternoon, and across southeastern Alabama and southwestern Georgia tonight.

"The pressure gives an idea of the size of the storm", he said.

President Donald Trump declared a state of emergency for the entire state of Florida, freeing up federal assistance to supplement state and local disaster responses.

What does Hurricane Michael have in store for the Carolinas? Forecasters said rainfall could reach up to a foot (30 centimeters) in spots.

A child was killed in Seminole County, Georgia during the storm, emergency management officials said.
