US airstrike wiped out al-Shabab camp in Somalia, intel officials say

The U.S. military on Tuesday announced its deadliest airstrike against the al-Shabab extremist group in Somalia in almost a year, killing about 60 fighters.

The air strike, which was launched on Friday, occurred near the al-Shabab-controlled community of Harardere in Mudug province in the central part of the country, the US Africa Command announced on Tuesday.

The strike took place Friday in the vicinity of Harardhere, about 300 miles northeast of Mogadishu, Somalia's capital, the military said in a statement.

In a statement, the us military said a strike last week near Harardere, Somalia, killed "approximately sixty terrorists".

There has been no independent confirmation to the attack.

In total for the current year the us military had conducted at least 24 air strike on Al-Shabab, which has direct relation to al-Qaeda.

Previous year there were 31 such attacks and 15 in 2016, according to the Foundation for Defence of Democracies, a Washington-based research institute.

Somalia on Sunday marked the first anniversary of al-Shabab's deadliest attack, a truck bombing in Mogadishu that killed well over 500 people.

Two officials tell The Associated Press that several missiles were fired Friday by two unmanned US drones.

They are also authorized to conduct offensive airstrikes in the southern part of the country targeting al Shabab safe havens.

US President Donald Trump expanded military operations against al-Shabab in March 2017.

So far this year in Somalia, the United States has conducted 27 strikes, including by drone, mostly against small numbers of Al-Shabab fighters.

While some observers have questioned the effectiveness of airstrikes by the U.S. and Kenya and raised concerns about civilians being killed, the USA military maintains that they "reduce al-Shabaab's ability to plot future attacks, disrupt its leadership networks and degrade its freedom of maneuver within the region".

More than 500 American personnel are partnered with Somali forces and AMISOM, which aims to counter the threat from Al-Shabaab jihadists.

At least two attacks involved U.S. aircraft.
