Trump's 'Space Force' to be built in stages by 2020

"And the reality is, the more we look at our competitors in space - chiefly among them are China and Russian Federation - we see the deployment of technologies by both of those countries - anti-satellite technologies", Pence said.

This summer, Trump directed the Defense Department to begin the process of establishing a space-focused military service that would be a counterpart to the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard.

The Trump administration in August announced an ambitious plan to usher in a new "Space Force" as the sixth branch of the military by 2020.

The White House does not foresee the creation of an independent space force before 2020, said US Vice-President Mike Pence, who heads the National Space Council, a government body that was revived past year after a decades-long hiatus.

The new force would be created to 'ensure that our warfighters have the freedom and flexibility they need to deter and defeat any threat to our security in the rapidly evolving battlefield of space, ' he said.

"Today, space is fundamentally different than it was a generation ago", Pence said during Tuesday's meeting at the National Defense University in Washington.

There is a "good chance" that the United States will formally launch its space force next year, President Donald Trump has said.

The space force will be designed "to ensure that our war fighters have the freedom and flexibility they need to deter and defeat any threat to our security in the rapidly evolving battlefield of space", he said.

'The time has come to stop studying the problem and start fixing it, ' he said.

'It will be a consolidation, we believe, and from there future Congresses and future administrations can grow and expand and nurture. the Space Force as they see fit'. Such a change, which the Defense Department has estimated would cost $13 billon in the first five years, must first be approved by Congress. "And the president is determined to make sure that America leads in space, as well, from a military standpoint", he said.

Mr Pence also said the administration would work with Congress, starting next year, to vote on a law creating an independent Space Force by 2020.
