The New Plastics Economy Global Commitment draws 'a line in the sand'

The New Plastics Economy Global Commitment draws 'a line in the sand'

Over 290 organisations signed 'The New Plastics Economy Global Commitment, ' led by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation in collaboration with UN Environment, on Monday.

Reportedly, 250 organizations made the pledge, including numerous world's biggest packaging producers, retailers, leading consumer brands and recyclers, as well as governments and non-governmental organizations. "I look forward to more members of the CGF signing the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment, and to working with them to drive systemic change".

Dame Ellen MacArthur, founder of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, stressed that while plastic clean up initiatives are now needed to protect the oceans, it is also vital to stop plastic pollution at "source".

"As the Board of The Consumer Goods Forum, we recognise the pressing need for our industry to play a leading role in tackling the issue of plastic waste". The Foundation and United Nations Environment now aim to take this momentum to the next level by launching the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment.

The commitments came during the 2018 Our Ocean Conference, held in Bali, Indonesia, and included pledges that by 2025, 100 percent of plastic packaging be reusable, compostable or recyclable, as well as moving away from "problematic" packaging and using significantly more recycled plastic in packaging. The commitment hopes to create "a new normal" for plastic packaging, with targets to be reviewed every 18 months and becoming increasingly ambitious.

Peter Freedman, Managing Director of The Consumer Goods Forum, said, "It is clear that the daunting challenge of plastic waste can only be addressed if we all work together - companies, governments, communities and consumers around the world".

"Most efforts 'til now have been focused on cleaning up plastic pollution".

L'Oréal, Johnson & Johnson and Burberry are amongst some of the biggest fashion and beauty brands in the world pledging to combat plastic pollution at the source.

"The aim is to move towards a circular approach, where you are only using recycled content and you work toward eliminating single-use packaging", Mr Blanchard told the BBC. Innovation is also critical, to ensure that the plastic we do need can be safely reused, recycled or composted ― circulated in the system so that it never becomes pollution.

She said the global commitment was "just one step on what will be a challenging journey" but one which could lead to huge benefits for society, the environment and the economy.

Between eight to 12 million tonnes of plastic is believed to seep into the oceans each year and by 2050, there could be more plastic (by weight) than fish in the oceans. The foundation said five venture capital firms have pledged more than $200 million toward creating a circular economy for plastics.

Greenpeace UK senior oceans campaigner Louise Edge welcomed the positive news that consumer brands are taking note of the groundswell of public pressure for action on plastics. "To make a plastic-free world possible we have a collective responsibility, and it starts with businesses".
