The number of victims in a traffic accident in Northwest China has risen to 44 people.

Officials said another 44 people were injured in the pile-up at the toll station which is close to Lanzhou, capital of Gansu.

15 people were dead and 44 others injured in the 31-vehicle pile-up on an expressway in northwest China's Gansu Province on Saturday evening, local authorities said.

A truck hit 31 cars and killed at least 15 people after the driver lost control Saturday night near an expressway toll booth in northwestern China, Chinese authorities said.

The truck driver, who was slightly injured in the crash, is under police watch and is being investigated.

He told police the truck's brakes failed on a continuous downhill section of the expressway.

A security footage from a bus that plunged into a river in China on Sunday revealed a fist fight between the driver and a passenger ultimately led to the vehicle's doom.

Media reports say it was the first time the driver had driven on the stretch of road.

In the meantime, Gansu provincial authorities have ordered risky sections of expressways to be inspected.
