New Brexit deal would avoid the need for an Irish border backstop

New Brexit deal would avoid the need for an Irish border backstop

Brexit is undermining Northern Ireland's hard-won peace by creating tensions between Catholic and Protestant communities, Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said Saturday, even as hopes rose for a solution to the Irish border problem that has deadlocked negotiations.

"He recalled the prior commitments made that the backstop must apply "unless and until" alternative arrangements are agreed."
A Downing Street spokesman described Mrs May's conversation with Mr Varadkar as "constructive", adding: "They agreed that the intention was that the backstop should only be a temporary arrangement and that the best solution to the Northern Ireland border would be found by agreeing a future relationship between the United Kingdom and the EU".

The publication added that Mrs May's cabinet could be discussing the plans on Tuesday and are hoping to make enough progree by Friday for the European Union to announce a special summit.

The Labour Party has all but ruled out supporting any deal May reaches with Brussels, leaving her reliant on her slender parliamentary majority, which comprises her own divided MPs and a small coalition partner, the Democratic Unionist Party.

It comes amid reports of an imminent deal - which Downing Street has described as "speculation".

Reports at the weekend that Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab has privately demanded the right to pull Britain out of the EU's proposed Irish backstop after just three months had been criticised by the Irish government.

"He recalled the prior commitments made that the backstop must apply "unless and until" alternative arrangements are agreed".

In a major intervention on the controversial backstop, amid reports that the government plans to keep Northern Ireland in aspects of the European Union trade structures, Mr Davis said it was "pretty clear there is genuine and significant concern regarding the implications of any fresh backstop text".

The PM is set to warn ministers that time is running out to strike an agreement with the European Union amid bitter wrangling over the Irish border backstop.

Under the EU's proposal, Northern Ireland would remain in the customs union and in the single market for goods.

The EU has to date rejected a temporary customs union.

"Obviously still having this issue in relation to the insurance arrangements for Northern Ireland and Ireland, and that very much remains our focus and attention in getting that deal".

The UK government has rejected that as a threat to the integrity of the UK.

At the same time, it reported there would be an "exit clause" in the deal to convince Brexiteers in Parliament that the arrangement - which they oppose - would not be permanent.

"I think that if we get a deal then there could well be a swing back to leave, if we don't get a deal then I suspect there'll be a further swing to Remain".

Meanwhile, a Survation poll of 20,000 people for Channel 4 estimated Remain would win another in/out referendum by 54 per cent to 46 per cent.
