Man killed in 3rd shark attack off Australia’s popular Cid Harbour

An Australian man attacked by a shark at Cid Harbour off Australia's north-eastern coast, close to the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef, has died overnight.

The 33-year-old, who police say is from Victoria, was paddle boarding with friends when he was attacked just after 5.30pm on Monday.

"The man and woman who was onboard have gone into the water in the late afternoon and they were taking turns at using a stand-up paddleboard".

"I've been in the Whitsunday area on and off for 30 years, and apart from some minor nips and bites, we've never heard of any substantial attacks such as what we've seen in these three attacks", he said on Tuesday.

"The majority of people from last time [in September] were very much against the drum lines". "His injuries and the reaction to those injuries was so severe that, unfortunately, he did not survive long after his arrival". "They did everything imaginable to try to save the man".

"Definitely one of the more hard ones for everyone involved", McCauley said. A 12-year-old tourist, Hannah Papps, was attacked in the same harbour while swimming from a yacht the next day, losing a leg.

The husband of one of the September Cid Harbour shark attack victims, 48-year-old Tasmanian woman Justine Barwick, said that the victim's family were in their thoughts.

A doctor on holiday with a group of friends in Australia has been killed by a shark which attacked him after he jumped into the water from a paddleboard.

Tourism Whitsundays chief executive Peter O'Reilly said at the time that the Trumbull attack was the first in the islands in 13 years and only the third ever recorded.

It's not yet known what species of shark was involved.

Despite the three deadly attacks, Queensland Tourism Minister Kate Jones rejected calls for permanent aquatic drum lines in Cid Harbour, saying the measure would not guarantee swimmer safety.

He said: "We need to now have the scientific background and investigation of what is causing this sudden spike of attacks and interactions with sharks".

Authorities killed six sharks in the Cid Harbor area in a week following the September attacks in a bid to reduce their numbers in the popular tourist location.

Critics took to social media to protest that killing sharks was not the answer and that the predator plays an important role in the ecosystem and the survival of the endangered reef. "We are reaching out to his colleagues and will provide counseling support to anyone who needs it", the rep said.
