Adults would be able to sell tax-free marijuana is the bill passes, potentially creating a legal but unregulated marketplace unlike any of the existing systems in place among existing recreational weed states.

Abortion. Alabama voters passed an amendment to the state constitution recognizing "the rights of unborn children, including the right to life", while West Virginia said yes to a measure banning Medicaid from funding abortions, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Michigan, which already had medical marijuana, became the first Midwestern state to fully legalize pot. Residents would be allowed to grow up to 12 marijuana plants at their home without a license or purchase pot from a licensed business.

MI has become the first state in the Midwest to approve recreational use of marijuana.

Utah voters also chose to legalize medical use of marijuana for people with qualifying illnesses, with about 56 per cent in favour and almost half of the state's polls reporting. Possession of marijuana by minors would be treated the same as possession of alcohol.

The state will collect a 10 percent excise tax on marijuana sales, with revenue split between education, infrastructure, and municipalities that have approved marijuana businesses.

Proposal 1 establishes a legal framework for licensing and regulating marijuana businesses in MI including cultivators and dispensaries. It also changes current related violations from crimes to civil infractions. The initiative requires all marijuana and marijuana products to be tested for safety and includes strict tracking requirements to ensure that marijuana is not diverted into the unregulated market. The industry would be subject to a 10 percent tax, as well as a sales tax.

Approval of Proposal 1 comes ten years after MI voters approved medical marijuana.
