Democrat Andrew Gillum and Republican Ron DeSantis vote in Florida

Republican Ron DeSantis won Florida's nationally watched governor's race on Tuesday - an enormous triumph for President Donald Trump that extends the two decades of GOP dominance in the state.

Gillum would have been Florida's first black governor, and over two-thirds of voters said that it is important to elect more racial and ethnic minorities to public office.

In terms of race, about 13 percent of the Florida electorate are black and the majority voted for Gillum for governor and Nelson for senator.

Gillum, the Mayor of Tallahassee, garnered support from former presidential candidate Bernie Sanders and former President Barack Obama. Neither Georgia nor Florida has elected a Democratic governor in 20 years.

But in Wisconsin, Democrat Tony Evers pulled off a narrow win in unseating Republican incumbent Scott Walker, according to data provider DDHQ.

But DeSantis won the governor's mansion by turning out the base and the state's growing share of conservative retirees from the Midwest, many of whom strongly back Trump.

Republican former U.S. Rep. Ron DeSantis and his wife Casey voted early Tuesday morning in Ponte Vedra Beach. "That race was swung by Donald Trump to DeSantis, who's now behind". Hill, who owns a home in Florida and is registered to vote there, flew back to the state from California on October 21 in order to vote for Democratic gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum in the 2018 midterm elections, as she revealed on social media.

With more than 80 percent of the vote counted, DeSantis held a lead of 1 percent.

It was Trump's support, including a July endorsement rally in Tampa, that helped propel DeSantis past a better-funded and more widely known opponent, Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam, in the August 28 Republican primary.

"People are going out and they're voting for something and not against".

The outcome of elections for state positions could also affect future control of the U.S. House of Representatives.

But the Democrats were trailing in redder areas of the state. He also said he intends to stay involved in Florida politics.

The race was the much-anticipated match-up of the ideological wings of each of the major political parties, with DeSantis representing the GOP base that backed Trump, Gillum representing the activist grassroots element of the Democratic Party.

He joked during brief remarks that he wasn't sure his wife, R. Jai Gillum, whom he met at Florida A&M University, had voted for him. Quick. But there are certain people in certain states that will never vote for a brown person.
