Indonesian Plane Grounded as Passengers Refuse to Fly Because of Durian Fruit

In April, the smell of durian rotting in a cupboard at an Australian university's library was mistaken for a gas leak, the Associated Press reported.

About two tonnes of durian, a controversial delicacy which is banned from many hotel rooms across Asia, had been loaded onto a Sriwijaya Air flight bound for Jakarta from Bengkulu, before passengers began to complain about the odour.

It has often been compared to the smell of raw sewage or turpentine ("garnished with a gym sock", as per travel and food writer Richard Sterling), so you know that it's not something you'd like to have around in an enclosed space.

The airline defended its decision to load durian on the plane but said that going forward it would investigate other methods of transporting the fruit to keep from disrupting passengers.

The late Anthony Bourdain reportedly described durian as "something you will either love or despise ..."

But Zidane said that despite the complaints, the pilot had decided the fruit - the smell of which some find nauseating - would remain stored in the cabin during the flight.

Some passengers were so angry there was nearly an altercation with crew, the BBC reported.

"Durian is not classified as a hazardous material to be transported on a plane", Abdul said.

The flight took off an hour later than scheduled to Indonesian capital, Jakarta. "I complained to the stewardess but they told me to just fill up a complaint form", passenger Amir Zidane wrote on Facebook, the BBC reported.

A passenger onboard the plane detailed the incident, which took place on Monday, in a Facebook post.

A flight was delayed for an hour after irate passengers complained about a frightful smell filling the plane cabin.

"It's not illegal to carry durian in a flight as long as it is wrapped properly in accordance with flight regulations - carried inside the hold".

Eventually, they all disembarked the plane while the durian was unloaded.
