Navy plane intercepted by ‘irresponsible’ Russian jet for 25 minutes

Officials have so far been unable to estimate how close the Russian aircraft came to the Navy plane, but said the flight behavior of the Russians was the key factor in describing the encounter as unsafe, CNN reported.

A Russian fighter jet flying at a high rate of speed buzzed a U.S. Navy reconnaissance plane as it flew in global airspace over the Black Sea Monday - an intercept that the Navy labeled "unsafe" and "irresponsible".

Russian fighter su-27 "unsafe and unprofessional manner, " intercepted the American aircraft EP-3 in global airspace over the Black sea, reported the press service of the US Navy.

The US Navy said the jet engines created turbulence for the crew and was unsafe. The crew of the EP-3 reported turbulence following the first interaction, and vibrations from the second. Then, about 25 minutes later, the fighter jet passed by again, this time turning on its afterburners before speeding away. It approached the aircraft at a safe distance and identified it as an EP-3E Aries signals reconnaissance version of the US Navy.

United States military officials have not said how close the Russian jet actually was.

"There is no margin for error and insufficient time or space for our aircrews to take corrective action", US Navy Capt. Bill Ellis said in the statement. The official release added that the EP-3 Aries hadn't provoked the Russian jet and urged all countries to adhere to the 1972 Agreement for the Prevention of Incidents On and Over the High Seas.

The Navy EP-3 was based in Souda Bay, Greece.

"The fighter crew reported identification of the U.S. signals reconnaissance aircraft and escorted it away from the airspace of the Russian Federation in compliance with all security and safety requirements", the statement says.

There have been a number of similar incidents over the a year ago.
