BOURKE STREET CHAOS: Car explodes, man with knife shot by police

One person was killed and two others were injured in a rush-hour stabbing rampage in downtown Melbourne Friday, that saw police shoot a knife-wielding suspect near a burning vehicle.

Footage taken by witnesses showed police shooting the man after he threatened them with an object that appeared to be a knife.

The footage, uploaded to Twitter, also shows pedestrians alternately hovering nearby and trying to make a quick exit from the scene. A Reuters witness said that the city centre was closed off by police and that dozens of officers were patrolling.

One person died and two others were injured after after being stabbed in Australia's Melbourne. Their condition is not yet know.

Police said officers "initially responded to a report of a vehicle on fire" in the city centre at around 4:20pm local time, as people began to leave work for the weekend.

The incident took place at Bourke Street as reported by Victoria Police.

The suspect has been shot and is alive, police say.

"Police shot the male in a chest and he is now in critical condition under guard in hospital", Victorian police superintendent David Clayton told reporters.

"There's no known link to terrorism at this stage", Clayton said.

"Police are aware of an incident in the vicinity of Bourke Street", Victoria Police have said in a statement.

A witness filmed the horrifying scenes as the attacker tried to thrust his knife towards police on Bourke Street.

Police are not looking for anyone further at this early stage.

Victoria Police have advised people to stay out of the area while the situation remains on-going.

They had initially thought the man was running to catch a tram close by, before a nearby police auto rushed to the scene.

"Me and the managers ran out and that's when we saw the auto on fire and then we saw the guy on the floor and we wanted to help, there were two blokes helping him out already, he was face down pools of blood around his face", he told AAP. Police response was swift and overwhelming.

"Police are now at an incident on Bourke St in the CBD".

Another witness said: "Big fire".

The apparent attack came as a 28-year-old James Gargasoulas underwent trial in Melbourne for driving into a crowd in the same area in 2017, killing six people.
