Faulty Equipment Likely To Blame For Active Shooter Response

Pender Schools issued a statement to the Fox affiliate: "There was a report of an active shooter situation at Topsail High School this morning after noises were heard coming from the top of the building".

It is not known if there are students on the premises; Topsail High School's homeroom bell is at 8:20 a.m., the call was placed around 6:30 a.m.

Pender County Sheriff's Department could not give details of the shooting on Friday morning but a spokesman told DailyMail.com it was an active scene.

A Pender County dispatcher told Reuters that deputies were responding to a situation at a local high school, but could not elaborate. He says deputies did find an HVAC unit that was malfunctioning and making sounds similar to gunshots.

Officials have confirmed the "active shooter" was, in fact, malfunctioning equipment.

"Pender County Schools is thankful everyone is safe and thanks local emergency services for its immediate response", the school tweeted. The report provoked a massive response by law enforcement and caused the school district to reroute buses and put schools on lockdown. According to its website, school begins at 8:30 a.m. Students that were already on buses were transported to the Lowes Foods across from the school.

It shares a campus with a middle school and an elementary school. It has around 1,300 students enrolled.
