Fly Jamaica jet crash-lands at Guyana (OJ256 to Toronto)

Fly Jamaica jet crash-lands at Guyana (OJ256 to Toronto)

Six people are reportedly injured after a Toronto-bound flight made an emergency landing in Guyana, according to airline officials.

Fly Jamaica Airways was certified by the Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority (JCAA) in September 2012, and was cleared to operate in the United States by USA authorities in December.

"Everyone was going insane, screaming, crying for their lives, everything", said passenger Invor Bedessee, describing how some people were injured getting off the flight.

The Minister of Public Infrastructure David Patterson told reporters during a press conference: "The reports are of back pain and such, no reports of any broken bones". After encountering hydraulical problems, the pilots chose to return to Georgetown Cheddi Jagan International Airport approximately 45 minutes after takeoff.

The Minister confirmed that the Fly Jamaica flight crashed at the same point where a Caribbean Airlines flight crashed in 2011.

He noted that even though the extended runway was not complete that the sand served as a cushion. A spokesman said consular assistance would be available to those who needed it.

The Guyana Civil Aviation Authority is leading an investigation and the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board, which automatically assists with inquiries under worldwide rules, was notified, officials said.

Anyone seeking further information on relatives onboard the Fly Jamaica flight OJ256 can contact +592 600-7022 or +592 261-2281 -hotlines established at the airport.

A Guyanese government official is expected to provide an update on the incident at 10 a.m. ET.
