White House suspends CNN's Jim Acosta

White House suspends CNN's Jim Acosta

Looking back at Acosta, who again rose up in his own defence, Trump added: "When you report fake news, which CNN does a lot, you are the enemy of the people".

The White House originally claimed that Acosta placed his hands on an intern who tried to take a microphone from him.

Mr Acosta, CNN's chief White House correspondent, said he was informed by Secret Service officers that he could not enter for his scheduled 8pm broadcast.

The heated exchange began after Acosta clung to the microphone and persisted with questions about the president's repeated and angry denunciation of a caravan of poor Central American migrants making their way through Mexico to the United States border. Mr. Acosta stated his opinion that the caravan wasn't an "invasion", as Mr. Trump has asserted, instead of asking a question. "But I watch you a lot and you ask a lot of stupid questions", Trump said, jabbing his finger at her before turning and walking away.

The dramatic White House expulsion of Attorney General Jeff Sessions may be getting all the attention, but there was another one that some consider just as important: the banning of journalist Jim Acosta. "You have to treat the presidency with respect", he said.

Trump also took a shot at CNN journalist, April Ryan, calling her "nasty" and a "loser". During their verbal altercation on Wednesday, Trump called Acosta a "terrible person". He was being overly aggressive and obnoxious with the president and made physical contact with someone who was just trying to do her job.

NABJ President Sarah Glover called them among the "finest reporters covering the White House".

The president said he had not decided if Acosta's pass would be reinstated and he suggested there "could be others" who lose their credentials.

After showing a CNN video of the incident, Kimmel shared Sanders' doctored video, which likely originated from alt-right conspiracy site InfoWars, or "a website for the mentally unbalanced", as Kimmel called it.

"What a stupid question that is", Trump said. In the meantime, Acosta has continued to report without physical access to the White House grounds; he is now in Paris to cover Trump's trip to France. You have to treat the White House with respect.

Trump responded the the allegations Friday, saying, "It wasn't doctored".

After Acosta asked about the investigation of Russia's involvement in the 2016 election, Trump tried to turn to Alexander, but Acosta continued to ask questions.

The tweeted video also does not have any audio, which Shapiro said would make it easier to alter.

During the news conference, Trump also turned on reporter Yamiche Alcindor of PBS' "NewsHour". The channel said the revocation "was done in retaliation for his [Acosta] challenging questions".

Acosta and Trump have sparred numerous times, with neither man hiding their contempt for each other.

Despite losing his White House pass, and the ability to travel with Trump and the rest of the press corps on Air Force One, Acosta went to Paris to cover Trump's meeting with world leaders this weekend.
