Stephen Hawking's thesis and wheelchair sell for $1 million

The personal possessions of the late physicist Stephen Hawkings were sold at an online auction and raised $1.8 million. A motorised wheelchair that belonged to the physicist, who died in March and which was expected to fetch £15,000, went for nearly £300,000.

During the auction was able to implement a single instance of the thesis that the scientist has created fifty-three years ago.

During his first year studying at Cambridge University in 1962 Hawking was diagnosed with motor neurone disease.

The same price of £296,750 was achieved by Hawking's earliest existing motorized wheelchair, which he used extensively during the worldwide book tour for his 1988 best-seller A Brief History of Time.

A signed copy of his 117-page dissertation - one of only five - titled Properties of Expanding Universes from 1965 secured the top price of £584,750. Proceeds will go to The Stephen Hawking Foundation and the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

A copy of Hawking's book "A Brief History of Time" with his thumbprint signature along with his essays, medals and awards were sold for £68,750 in online sale on Thursday. All of those were sold, and the total, about US$1.8 million, was seven times more than had been predicted.

Other items included in Christie's charity auction were handwritten documents from Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin and Albert Einstein, an original production script for Hawking's final appearance on "The Simpsons" and an invitation to the "Reception for Time Travellers". Letters and manuscripts belonged to Newton, Einstein and Darwin were also put on the sale.

Hawking's daughter Lucy said that the sale gave "admirers of his work the chance to acquire a memento of our father's extraordinary life in the shape of a small selection of evocative and fascinating items".
