Honea said the number of people listed as missing in the disaster remained officially at 228, but added that his office had received more than 1,500 requests for "welfare checks" from people concerned about the fate of their loved ones.

Swain noted. "But on top of these other factors, climate change is acting as a pervasive and growing 'wildfire threat multiplier'".

The scope of the fire was captured by NASA's Earth Observatory satellite, showing the towering flames and smoke from above.

Authorities called in a mobile DNA lab and anthropologists to help identify victims.

So far, 29 bodies have been recovered in or near Paradise, a town of about 26,000 that's been all but leveled by the Camp fire.

The search also went on for the missing. "I need to find my mom - I'm not giving up hope she's out there", he said.

"He has friends in that area".

"I am one of the lucky ones", she wrote on Twitter.

Sol Bechtold drove from shelter to shelter looking for his mother, Joanne Caddy, a 75-year-old widow whose house burned down along with the rest of her neighborhood in Magalia, just north of Paradise. He laid in the water as the fire passed above him, Vasquez says he told her. "You don't know if she's safe".

"I got in a 3-foot deep V-cut in the stream. She's a strong, smart woman".

These winds, called Santa Ana winds, and the unique geography of high mountains and deep valleys act like chimneys, fortifying the fires, Thornicke said.

The death toll from a series of wildfires sweeping through parts of California has risen to 31 after the bodies of six more people were found.

Vasquez realized nearly too late that the Camp Fire was different.

The 42 confirmed fatalities marks the largest loss of life ever from a single wildland fire in California, Honea said.

"I know that a lot of you are feeling a lot of pain right now, and a lot of shock", she said.

Twenty-nine people have died in the Northern California blaze. The Woolsey fire has burned over 70,000 acres and has reached the Pacific Coast at Malibu as it continues grow.

Reality star Kim Kardashian, actress Alyssa Milano, Orlando Bloom, Lady Gaga and director Guillermo del Toro were also among the celebrities forced to pack up and flee their upscale homes in Calabasas and Malibu, with flames licking at their heels.

Local and state officials have cleared some Southern California shrub, enough for normal weather and winds.

The blaze has consumed around 93,000 acres (37,600 hectares), destroyed an estimated 370 structures and was 30 percent contained, according to Cal Fire.

The reality that the Golden State's fires are burning more land, destroying more homes, and inevitably killing Californians is consistent with a region that's growing hotter, and dryer.

As fires in the state rage on, claiming homes and lives, the Canadian singer has written a post on his website slamming Donald Trump for denying climate science.

On Saturday, Trump tweeted threateningly from Paris, "There is no reason for these massive, deadly and costly forest fires in California except that forest management is so poor".

Rice also said California does not mismanage its forests, namely because 60 percent of the state's forests are federally-managed.
