Outbreak of E.coli infections linked to romaine lettuce — CDC

Outbreak of E.coli infections linked to romaine lettuce — CDC

This year has been absolutely brutal for anyone who enjoys a good salad, with the CDC issuing alert after alert warning people not to eat lettuce grown from certain regions or purchased during certain time frames in specific areas.

If you have romaine lettuce in your refrigerator, throw it out.

According to officials, 32 people in 11 states have reported illness due to the E. coli outbreak.

One person who was sickened developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, a type of kidney failure, the CDC said. No deaths have so far been reported.

The most recent illness onset in the US among these cases was October 31, 2018.

It is not the same strain as the one from Yuma, Arizona, which sickened dozens earlier this year.

Romaine Lettuce Warning: Throw Away All Heads of Lettuce Because of E. coli Illness Fears, CDC Says
CDC Warning: Do Not Eat Any Romaine Lettuce

The CDC said consumers should throw it all away and clean the shelf or drawer where the lettuce was stored.

If you think you've gotten ill from eating lettuce, please talk to your doctor as soon as possible. All brands of romaine lettuce are suspect because no common grower, supplier, distributor or brand has been identified by the CDC. But he says suppliers can help by withdrawing romaine products until the contamination can be identified.

CDC officials are working with the Food and Drug Administration and other officials to determine the source of the outbreak. The advice includes all types of romaine lettuce including salad mixes that contain romaine.

'This investigation is ongoing and the advice will be updated as more information is available'.

Several similar romaine lettuce E.coli cases have been reported across Canadian provinces in the past few months.

Write down what you ate in the week before you started to get sick. Some people may have a fever, which usually is not very high (less than 101˚F/38.5˚C).
