World Health Organization says DRC Ebola outbreak second largest in history

A total of 426 cases of the virus have now been reported in and around the town of Beni, taking the outbreak past that recorded in Uganda in 2000. Some field activities, including vaccination, were temporarily halted in Beni, the outbreak's epicenter, on November 17 following attacks by an armed rebel group.

"We haven't seen the height of this outbreak", she warned as Ebola moves into new areas in Congo that are worrying close to the heavily traveled border with Uganda.

The largest epidemic of Ebola virus disease (EVD) recorded between December 2013 and April 2016, generated more than 28,000 cases and more than 11,000 deaths in the African countries of Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.

Previously, the ReEBOV Antigen Rapid Test Kit was eligible for procurement to Ebola-affected countries, under the WHO Emergency Assessment. More than 37,000 people have been vaccinated for the disease in the outbreak zone since August 8, according to the health ministry's daily bulletin on Thursday.

World Health Organization has highlighted that more than 37,000 people have been given Ebola vaccinations.

Ebola is believed to have killed 245 people in North Kivu and Ituri provinces where attacks by armed groups and community resistance to health officials have hampered the response.

"The outbreak is far from under control and it is highly likely that it will not be beaten for another six months".

Ebola has killed 240 people and infected more than 400 since July in an outbreak that shows little sign of abating. "Yes we need to see more funds and resources mobilized, but also address the impacts of the protracted conflict".

"As the risk of national and regional spread is very high, it is important for neighboring provinces and countries to enhance surveillance and preparedness activities", the statement read.

Given the complications, this outbreak will last at least another six months before it can be contained, World Health Organization emergencies chief Dr Peter Salama has predicted.

In a separate statement on Thursday, WHO said so far 36 Ebola cases have been reported among newborn babies and children under 2.

The committee chairman, Robert Steffen, said they came to the decision by looking at three main criteria. "Is there potential for requiring global response?"

In a situation report released Wednesday, WHO said it is "confident that the outbreak can be contained despite ongoing challenges".
