One killed, 40 injured in overturned bus accident

Bobby White, a spokesman for the Achievement School District in Memphis, said students from five of the district's schools were in the bus that crashed.

State police said the bus overturned after driving off the interstate.

Arkansas State Police say the crash happened about 2:40 a.m. Monday on Interstate 30 near the 111 mile marker, just west of Benton.

Memphis is roughly 130 miles (209 kilometres) east of Little Rock.

Arkansas Children's Hospital said they received over 20 children at its emergency room this morning. Authorities say as many as 40 people were injured, a lot of them children. They were treated for cuts, bruises and some orthopedic injuries then released.

The elementary-school age children from the Orange Mound Youth Association in southeast Memphis were returning home after playing in a tournament in the Dallas area over the weekend, according to Memphis TV station WMC.

WHBQ reported that the vast majority of patients were taken to two hospitals: Arkansas Children's Hospital and Saline Memorial.

Maxson said some of the children suffered injuries to the brain or other internal organs, while others suffered cuts and broken bones. The community comes together around its youth football teams, where kids train to be part of the highly competitive Melrose High School squad.
