India strongly condemns Chabahar terror attack

There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

Earlier today, bomb attack on a police command post had killed at least three people in Chabahar in southeastern region of Iran, state media reported. Reuters could not verify their authenticity.

Chabahar lies in Sistan-Balochistan province which has always been a flashpoint, with separatists and extremists carrying out attacks targeting the authorities.

Rahmdel Bameri, Chabahar's acting governor, was among the Iranian officials who said two victims were killed by the December 6 car-bomb attack.

In June past year, IS militants attacked parliament and the shrine of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the leader of the 1979 Islamic Revolution, killing at least 18 people and wounding more than 50.

In 2010, two suicide bombers killed at least 28 people, including some of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards, at a mosque in southeast Iran; an attack Iranian leaders said was backed by the United States.

Tehran accuses its key regional rival Saudi Arabia and the U.S. of funding most of these groups, a charge Riyadh and Washington deny.

"As we've made clear in the past, such crimes won't go unpunished: In 2010, our security services intercepted & captured extremists en route from UAE", Zarif said in what appeared to be a reference to the 2010 capture of Sunni insurgent leader Abdolmalek Rigi.

Foreign Office Spokesperson Dr Muhammad Faisal, in a tweet message had strongly condemned the terrorism in Iran's port city of Chahbahar.

"Iran will bring terrorists and their masters to justice", he wrote on Twitter.

Meanwhile, Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qassemi also denounced the "malicious and inhumane terror attack, which he said was aimed at disrupting Iran's economic development, which is underway in cooperation with regional states".

Chabahar is also the site of a port complex, which is being developed in cooperation with India as part of a new transportation corridor for landlocked Afghanistan.
