Two US Marine planes crash while refueling off Japan

The crew member was being assessed by doctors, the Marine statement said, adding that "the search and rescue operations continue for the remaining six".

The planes involved are a KC-130 and an F/A-18 based at Iwakuni near Hiroshima and were carrying seven personnel, Marines officials said.

Search and rescue efforts were under way off Japan after two US Marine Corps aircraft crashed in a still-unexplained mishap, leaving seven US military personnel missing, US officials said. "Japanese search and rescue aircraft immediately responded to aid in recovery". The accident occurred at around 2 a.m. Thursday, local time (12 p.m. Wednesday ET).

The last major US military aircraft incident occurred in May when an Air National Guard C-130 cargo plane crashed outside Savannah, killing all nine personnel on board.

United States media say the two planes crashed during midair refuelling but this has not been officially confirmed.

They said Japanese rescuers found one of the crew members who is in a stable condition.
