Philadelphia Phillies near deal for Seattle Mariners' Jean Segura

Philadelphia Phillies near deal for Seattle Mariners' Jean Segura

The Phillies traded Santana and shortstop J.P. Crawford to the Mariners on Monday for shortstop Jean Segura, right-handed reliever Juan Nicasio and left-handed reliever James Pazos.

This past season, Segura hit.304/.341/.415 along with 10 home runs and 61 RBI.

The Phillies reportedly remain interested in signing Manny Machado, Bryce Harper and Patrick Corbin in free agency.

With the Braves (signing Josh Donaldson), Mets (Robinson Cano trade) and Nationals (Yan Gomes trade) already making a splash, each bringing an All-Star into the NL East, the Phillies made their move less than a week before the 2018 MLB Winter Meetings commence in Las Vegas.

Along with his defensive skills, Segura has proven to be a valuable hitter as well, so if Philadelphia fans weren't excited about the shortstop before, they better get on board the hype train since this could turn out to be one of the most underrated moves of the offseason.

For this deal to take place, the 28-year-old Segura waived his no-trade clause.

Philadelphia will start Segura at shortstop for the foreseeable future. How about Santana? Why are they giving up on him so early in his contract? They are getting a very good player in Segura, who will be an instant upgrade at the plate and in the field.

The Mariners would likely receive J.P. Crawford in return. The Phillies also have a $17 million club option for 2023, with a $1 million buyout.

Speaking of Crawford, the former first-round pick never materialized into an All-star caliber player that everybody expected to become due to injuries. Doing so could cost them well over $600 million, though Philadelphia has plenty of money to spend with less than $70 million committed to players for next season before landing Segura.

Crawford, 23, hit.214 with three homers and 12 RBIs over 49 games last season with the Phillies.
