US warship challenges Russia claims in Sea of Japan

USS McCampbell "sailed in the vicinity of Peter the Great Bay to challenge Russia's excessive maritime claims and uphold the rights, freedoms and lawful uses of the sea enjoyed by the United States and other nations", Lt. Rachel McMarr, a spokesperson for the U.S. Pacific Fleet said in a statement to the media.

The missile destroyer conducted what the U.S. Navy describes as Freedom of Navigation Operations (FONOP), aimed at challenging nations that claim sovereignty over waters beyond the 12 nautical miles of their coasts guaranteed by global law.

"McCampbell sailed in the vicinity of the Peter the Great Bay, to challenge the excessive Maritime claims of Russian Federation and to defend the rights, freedoms and lawful uses of the sea enjoyed by the United States and other Nations", said Makmur. Russia's claims in Peter the Great Bay extend 12 nautical miles from the mouth of the bay, but the United States only recognizes claims within 12 nautical miles of the coast.

Meanwhile, Russian Television broadcaster RT called the move a "stunt" and reported "The last time a FONUP was conducted in this area was 1987, at the peak of Cold War tensions with the Soviet Union.' ".

"We reserve the right to operate freely in accordance with worldwide laws and norms", he also said.

Tensions stay excessive between Moscow and Washington and have escalated additional since the final week when Russian Federation captured three Ukrainian ships and 24 Ukrainian sailors within the Sea of Azov.

Vladivostok, notably, is the headquarters for the Russian Pacific Fleet. He said the latest USA operation in the Sea of Japan may indicate increasing United States concern about Russia's posturing in the Pacific. The last time the U.S. Navy sailed in the area was 1987, the same year the U.S. signed the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty with Russian Federation.

"Russia's unprovoked assault on Ukrainian naval vessels within the Black Sea close to the Kerch Strait is a harmful escalation in a sample of more and more provocative and threatening exercise", the Pentagon stated in a press release, explaining the maneuver.

Tensions between Moscow and Washington are on the rise in the wake of apparent Russian aggression in the Sea of Azov, where Russian vessels rammed and fired on Ukrainian vessels before capturing the ships and their crews, and United States plans to withdraw from the Cold War Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty, a response to Russian violations.

Ultimately, however, Russia's actions and its detention of Ukrainian sailors prompted Trump to cancel a planned meeting with Putin during the G20 summit.

The U.S. military, which has made a series of high-profile FONOPs in the disputed South China Sea this year, characterized the operation as "routine" and did not target a specific country.

Under the rules of the Montreux Convention, US ships can only be in the Black Sea for 21 days. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo subsequently announced that the US would begin the process of withdrawing from the Cold War nuclear treaty in 60 days should Russian Federation not come back into compliance.
