Will implement odd-even scheme whenever required: Arvind Kejriwal

"Although the overall air quality will remain in the "very poor" zone for the next three days, it will improve by a few notches by Thursday as good wind speed prevailing over Delhi and adjoining areas will continue to disperse pollutants", System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR) said in its daily pollution analysis.

The Supreme Court-appointed Environment Pollution Control Authority (EPCA) on Monday imposed a three-day ban on industrial activities in pollution hot-spots and construction work across the national capital region. Besides Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai have also been listed in the top 10 polluted cities, with AQI level of 255 and 193, respectively.

Amid "severe" air pollution quality in Delhi, chief minister Arvind Kejriwal hinted on Tuesday that the state government might re-introduce the odd-even vehicle rationing scheme if needed. According to the SAFAR, the overall air quality in Delhi is expected to remain in severe range until Tuesday. The agency has advised people to avoid all outdoor activities, such as taking walks.

With the national capital battling "severe" air pollution, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said on Tuesday the Delhi government will implement odd-even scheme, to regulate plying of private vehicles in the city, whenever it is required. Air quality in Faridabad and Noida was also recorded in the "severe" category.

Twenty-five areas recorded severe pollution levels, while nine recorded very poor air quality, the CPCB data showed.

Even as air pollution level was creating "emergency-like conditions" in the Capital, Mr. Kejriwal was yet to "understand the seriousness" of it, said the BJP.

The unfavourable meteorological conditions are likely to keep the air quality in the "severe" category for the next couple of days, authorities said. An AQI above 400 falls in the "severe" category.

Talking about the solution to curb the toxic cocktail of gases in Delhi, Dr Guleria said, "Overall solution is a holistic plan where individuals have to take part, they start using public transport, less use of cars especially diesel vehicles". "The forecasting model predicts a faster improvement due to faster dispersion".

"The wind speed and ventilation index are highly unfavorable for dispersion of pollutants", it said.

"The ventilation index which allows dispersion (of pollutants) is extremely poor and it is expected that these conditions will prevail for the next two days", Lal said in the letter.

Pollution remained in the "severe" level for the fourth consecutive day as high humidity, low wind speed and cold weather are preventing the dispersal of particulates.
