'Blood moon' eclipse should be visible in January

A lunar eclipse occurs when the moon passes into Earth's shadow.

The event has an original name: the "super blue blood moon".

The total lunar eclipse will be seen throughout the United States beginning January 20.

On Jan. 20, a total lunar eclipse, sometimes called a blood moon, will take place.

During a total lunar eclipse, some light from the sun which is not directly blocked by our planet is refracted through the Earth's atmosphere and bent onto the moon at a shallow angle which turns it a dramatic reddish-brown color. A lunar eclipse is called a Supermoon when the moon is closest to Earth, meaning the actual distance between the Moon and the Earth is lesser than 223,000 miles from Earth.

The rare lunar event will be visible in the sky across the United States starting late on January 20 and last into the early morning of January 21.
