Doctors: Flu season only beginning in MI

Mesa County Public Health has started a new online data tracker for flu statistics, and it's open to the public.

CDC also recommends everyday preventive actions, like staying away from people who are sick, covering coughs and sneezes and frequent handwashing, to help slow the spread of germs that cause respiratory (nose, throat and lungs) illnesses, like flu.

Flu season is well underway.

Carlstrom said flu season tends to peak between December and January, during the holiday season, possibly related to an increase in social gatherings and contact.

At this time past year, there were 2,400 fewer confirmed flu cases in Canada overall - and only 26 children had been hospitalized.

Marquette County Public Health nurse Jean Reynolds says there was an increase in the amount of people getting vaccinated this year. Influenza vaccines are available with a wide range of options for different age groups i.e. children aged 6 months and above and adults aged 65 and above. "And people sometimes make light of it, but it's a very serious disease and so we're full speed ahead trying to encourage people to get their flu vaccine", says Communicable Disease Nurse Mari Yourdon.

Dr. Williams says with so many of us travelling, shopping or going to parties this time of year, the risk of being exposed to the flu is high and the flu shot can help you avoid getting seriously ill and spreading the flu to others.

Several counties are experiencing flu outbreaks including Collier County, which has seen as many as 4 outbreaks this year. People with the flu are infectious for up to 7 days after symptoms begin. While most people may recover within a week or two, some can develop serious and even life-threatening complications.

Dr. Williams says for anyone anxious about getting the flu or having other negative reactions due to getting the flu shot - don't.

Health officials said flu activity will continue to rise in the upcoming weeks.

The U.S. influenza vaccines market was valued at US$ 2.1 billion in 2016 and is expected to witness a CAGR of 15.9% over the forecast period (2017-2025).

The best preventive measure that can be taken to ward off or mitigate influenza is to get a flu vaccine each year, the CDC states. If they don't get flu shots by the 31st, then they must be kept home from school for the duration of flu season (through March 31), unless they get the shot.
