American being monitored in Omaha after possible Ebola exposure

This person has no Ebola symptoms but will be monitored for up to 2 weeks in Omaha, Nebraska, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC).

Nebraska Medical Center looked after three patients with Ebola who were brought back to the United States for care during the West African Ebola outbreak in 2014 and 2015.

Nebraska Medicine treated three patients with Ebola in 2014.

Ted Cieslak MD, an infectious diseases specialist with Nebraska Medicine, revealed that the person is not ill and is not contagious despite possible exposure.

If the exposed person develops symptoms, Cieslak said, the Nebraska team is among the most qualified in the world to deal with them because of the medical center's previous experience caring for Ebola patients. If it is necessary, though, the individual will be transferred to the Nebraska Biocontainment Unit, where regular updates will be provided.

Nebraska Medical Center officials said that the physician was transported to the facility from the Congo by private plane and auto.

Nebraska Medicine, a network of hospitals, clinics and health care colleges, together with academic partner UNMC, are among world leaders in the treatment of Ebola, which spreads through contact with bodily fluids and causes hemorrhagic fever with severe vomiting, diarrhea and bleeding. The outbreak began August 1 and has left more than 300 people dead, with 545 confirmed cases recorded as of Saturday, according to the country's health ministry. Nebraska Medical Center is home to one of the nation's few dedicated biocontainment units, its news release said.

Doctors will work with federal, state and county public health officials to monitor the man and secure the area so no members of the public or other patients are exposed.

Observation of the individual could last as long as two weeks and is being done in a location that neither the public nor patients can access, the facility said. Early symptoms include headache, fever, chills and muscle pain.
