USB Type-C Authentication Protocol announced - Peripherals

USB Type-C Authentication Protocol announced - Peripherals

One is avoiding wonky USB Type-C chargers, which is a well-documented and immensely frustrating hazard of owning a USB Type-C device.

The USB-IF notes that the security standard will be optional rather than compulsory - at least initially - and any products which use the authentication protocol will retain control over the way the security policies are implemented and enforced. And if you could still say that too many devices in 2018 still used the old microUSB port, chances are that in 2019, USB-C will truly be everywhere.

The program will include a set protocol for authentication meant for USB Type-C chargers, cables, devices, and other accessories.

The USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF), an organization dedicated to advancing USB technology, has laid out plans for a cryptographic-based 128-bit authentication system to help defend against non-compliant USB chargers, USB sticks laden with malware, and other assorted dangers.

As of now, hooking up your device with an unknown USB Type-C charger could be a major potential threat in terms of data security. DigiCert is managing the Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) and certificate authority services for the program, a fact the group touted in its own press release.

USB-C Is Going to Get A Lot More Secure

The program defines an optimal cryptographic authentication protocol. Sure, you may end up without the ability to juice up your phone at the airport, but it's better than the alternative.

That is all marvelous, but because every tool can be a weapon when used improperly and we can't have anything nice, there are fears that this program is essentially a DRM mechanism.

When USB Type-C (aka USB-C) arrived a few years ago, it looked promising.

Support for authenticating over either USB data bus or USB Power Delivery communications channels.

Presently, there is no standard to determine the authenticity of USB Type-C connectors, and this poses a challenge for system administrators; they have to take additional measures to prevent the exploitation of USB ports. More security is always a good thing, right?
