Meteors come to Kingman skies

NASA describes the Quadrantids as "one of the best annual meteor showers", known for their "bright fireball meteors".

The last time that Qatar had an encounter with meteor showers was back in November a year ago when annual meteors "Taurid and Leonid" appeared in the skies of Doha. "The reason the peak is so short is due to the shower's thin stream of particles and the fact that the Earth crosses the stream at a perpendicular angle", NASA explains.

During clear, dark conditions, 50 to 100 meteors per hour can be seen during the peak, but EarthSky warns that because the peak falls in a narrow window of a few hours, viewers will need to be on their toes.

Best chances: Those in the Northern Hemisphere, like Europe and nearby areas, will have the best chances to see it, Fox 6 reports.

The meteor shower is called the Ursids, because the meteors seem to radiate from the constellation Ursa Minor.

You'll be able to see them with the naked eye if you stand in a dark spot away from street lights. The shower will be short-lived and last around six hours, according to Sky and Telescope.

Smashing at the Earth's atmosphere at 150,000 miles per hour, expect to see 20-40 meteors per hour.

2018 had some impressive celestial events; moments that light up the night sky and captured the imaginations of people all ages across the planet. You'll want a wide, unobstructed view as well.

The best time is between midnight at about 6am in the morning.

The Quadrantids get their name from Quadrantid Muralis, a constellation - no longer recognized as one - first spotted between Boötes and Draco in 1795.

Quadrantids are different compared to other meteor showers such as the Perseids or Geminids.

'Be patient-the show will last until dawn, so you have plenty of time to catch a glimpse'. Just a few days later, a partial solar eclipse will take place this weekend.

We're also approaching a new moon on 5 January, so there won't be much of a lunar glow either.
