China's Chang'e-4 spacecraft lands on far side of the moon

China's lunar rover drives smoothly on moon's far side By Xinhua Saturday, January 05, 2019, 11:35 By Xinhua Photo provided by the China National Space Administration on Jan 4, 2019 shows image of Yutu-2, China's lunar rover, at preset location A on the surface of the far side of the moon.

China's mission is to learn more about the little-understood region of the moon and compete with the U.S. and Russian Federation as a powerhouse of space exploration.

BEIJING: The Chinese rover on the "dark" side of the moon is making its tracks on the soft lunar surface.

Photos of the rover leaving "humankind's first tracks" were sent back to Earth by the lander after the rover separated from it. Wu Weiren, chief designer of the lunar mission for the China National Space Administration, called the separation "a small step for the rover, but one giant leap for the Chinese nation".

The CNSA said that Yutu is a symbol of kindness, purity, and agility, and is identical to the moon rover in both outlook and connotation.

Chang'e-4 lunar probe mission - named after the moon goddess in Chinese mythology - was the second Chinese probe to land on the moon following the Yutu rover mission in 2013.

Jade Rabbit 2 drove off a ramp the previous night and on to the soft, snow-like surface after a Chinese spacecraft made the first-ever soft landing on the moon's far side. With the help of ground-penetrating radar, it will allow scientists to study the moon's mysterious "dark side", how its surface interacts with solar wind, and perhaps the process behind the formation of lunar water. "You can get on the moon and so can we - I think this is very good". "Probably after some years ordinary people like us can also travel up there to take a look", he said.

The rover, also known as Jade Rabbit 2, has six powered wheels, so it can keep working even if one fails, according to The Associated Press. It has a maximum speed of 200 metres per hour and can climb a 20-degree hill or an obstacle up to 20cm tall. The other side, most of which can not be seen from the Earth, is called the far side or dark side because most of it is uncharted.
