HTC reveals Vive Pro Eye VR headset with built-in eye tracking

There's no pricing yet, but it's supposed to launch in the second quarter of 2019.

In a surprise announcement, HTC also announced the Vive Cosmos, the company's next-generation VR headset. I got to try out the game myself and the eye tracking worked pretty much as expected, though it was only available with the in-game menus - the gameplay itself still required a controller, which in this case was mounted on a plastic bat.

HTC also debuted an all-new VR headset called the Cosmos.

Eye-tracking technology is exactly what it sounds like: hardware baked into the device that monitors where the user looks within the virtual environment. Cosmos can still also be powered by a PC or a laptop, but it seems like mobile will be the next steps for VR functionality.

If you've ever used a virtual reality headset, you know that it tracks a lot of things including your head and hands to ensure a seamless, immersive experience. Additionally, it offers the Vive experience without the use of any external tracking devices. As the name suggests, this new headset is bringing eye integration into the mix, improving performance for both the company and consumers. Other than that, the Vive Pro Eye has all the same specs that the Vive Pro does.

HTC General Manager, Americas, Dan O'Brien, positioned the Eye hardware as a great move for enterprise users. Despite having a presence at the event, details regarding the new headset are rather scarce for now though since the company stated that more information regarding it will only be shared in the coming months. The last one is important for people using laptops to run their VR experience as the practice burns through battery life.

According to HTC, the number of Viveport subscriptions went up three times since last CES, and it also has three times the amount of content as before.

Today, at CES 2019, HTC took the stage to launch several new products and upgrades in its popular Vive virtual reality division.

On the services side, HTC announced Viveport Infinity, a long-term VR subscription service giving customers access to over 500 apps, including "top games" and educational apps, for a monthly fee.
