AMD announces the $699 Radeon VII: 7nm Vega, coming February

The Radeon VII, the world's first consumer 7nm graphics card, promises to deliver twice the memory, more than twice the memory bandwidth and up to 29 percent higher gaming performance than the Radeon RX Vega 64 GPU. Interestingly the RX Vega 64 houses, you guessed it, 64 CUs, which means the new Radeon VII actually has fewer GCN cores inside it. The AMD Radeon VII graphics card will be available from February 7, 2019 for $699 Dollars.

AMD boasts that the card, which packs a gamer-friendly triple cooling system, offers 25 per cent more performance, at the same power, as previous Vega graphics. It's also hard to know what such a part would be called given that Radeon VII is a clear reference to the 7nm process. So what's inside the new Radeon VII? This is the second generation of AMD's Vega graphics architecture, hence the VII - Vega 2. Windows gaming performance is 25~42% faster over RX Vega 64 with 4K gaming. Its 16GB of HBM2 (second-generation high bandwidth memory) as mentioned pushes through ultra-fast speeds.

AMD were also keen to emphasise that their 3rd Gen Ryzen CPUs will be the first PC platform to support the super fast PCIe 4.0 standard, letting it take advantage of some of the faster graphics cards (hello Radeon 7) and devices that are coming out this year.

If it can match the performance of the RTX 2080, however, Nvidia has already established that you can charge up to $800 for such a card.

On the laptop front, AMD said on stage that it was focusing its efforts on students enrolled in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) fields. There's a chance that across the board of DX11 and the dwindling number of DX12 games that the Radeon VII might start to lag behind a touch.

While exact performance of course remains to be seen, it's interesting that AMD is basing its gaming-focussed version of Vega 20 on the cut down variant of the GPU, as the additional cores on a fully enabled version could have enabled RTX 2080-beating performance - going by AMD's own figures and our own rough calculations, at least. I guess maybe that changed when AMD saw the pricing and performance of the Nvidia RTX range...

AMD just talked about 3rd-gen Ryzen on 7nm aka Ryzen 3000.
