First partial solar eclipse of 2019 witnessed today

First partial solar eclipse of 2019 witnessed today

Most parts of Asia including India, some parts of western Europe and Africa will not be able to witness this celestial event.

A partial solar eclipse, in which part of the sun's disk is obscured by the moon passing between the star and Earth, was observed across Japan on Sunday morning. However, Africa, Europe and Asia all get some kind of view of a weird-looking half-full moon turning slightly red.

"On that Tuesday in July 2019, the eyes of the world will turn to Chile, as the Moon will pass between the Earth and the Sun, blocking out the light of our Sun", explains Claudio Melo, ESO Representative in Chile. Our first eclipse - a total lunar eclipse - of the new year is coming amid ideal conditions and will be visible throughout the Americas, Greenland, Iceland, Western Europe, and Western Africa.

But for real astronomers, a lunar eclipse isn't a scientifically important event.

The moon will continue deeper into the shadow, and the total eclipse begins at 8:41 p.m.

As 2019 goes by, two lunar eclipses and three solar eclipses can be viewed. The sun, earth and moon will line up perfectly so that the moon slips into the earth's shadow.

Lunar eclipses aren't as rare as solar eclipses and they are a lot easier to watch because you don't need safety equipment. Astronomy Magazine's senior editor Michael Bakich says the Moon is always safe to look at because, "just like objects here on Earth, we see it because it reflects sunlight".

The partial solar eclipse as seen from Calgary, Alberta, on May 20, 2012, captured at maximum eclipse. By 3:40pm EST, the partial eclipse will be over as well, and the moon's shadow will have passed across the continent and back over to the Atlantic Ocean. That can only happen to Mercury or Venus, the inner planets, as seen from Earth, and November 11, 2019, it's the turn of the closest planet to the Sun. The event is, strictly speaking, a partial eclipse, but a very pretty one. The spectacle can look more dramatic at sunrise, when it can be photographed more easily, and with a foreground.

Total lunar eclipse ends: 10:43 p.m. (January 20).

January is the next partial Eclipse of the sun.
