Jeff Bezos tweeted that he and his wife, MacKenzie, are divorcing

Amazon founder and chief executive Jeff Bezos could lose nearly US$75 billion (AU$104 billion) through his divorce announced overnight.

According to the statement, the couple made a decision to divorce after a long period of "loving exploration and trial separation" and expect to continue as partners in joint ventures and projects.

Mackenzie is a novelist and founder of an anti-bullying organisation.

According to Bloomberg News, Bezos is now worth about $137 billion. The pair met before the Amazon founder started his empire, when they worked together.

In addition to Bezos' stake in Amazon, the couple have also acquired at least five homes in California, Washington state, Texas, Washington D.C. and NY throughout their 25-year marriage.

The company's value makes Jeff Bezos the richest man on the planet, with a 16 percent ownership stake in the online marketplace, resulting in his $137 billion net worth, according to Forbes. He and his wife both signed the announcement, which ended with a vow to remain "cherished friends".

"In light of the recent joint tweet announcing their divorce, the Bezos' are likely to have an amicable and confidential settlement". If the couple split their fortune equally, it could leave MacKenzie, 48, with US$69 billion, making her the world's richest woman. At the time, both were working at an investment management firm together in NY, but they quit and moved to Seattle where Bezos founded Amazon.

Amazon this week passed Microsoft to become the world's biggest publicly traded company by market capitalization.

The statement, released by Jeff Bezos on Twitter, emphasizes their love for one another and their pride in their marriage for the quarter-century that it lasted.

The couple have also acquired at least five homes in California, Washington state, Texas, Washington D.C. and NY throughout their 25-year marriage.

Bezos also owns the Washington Post newspaper, while the company acquired the Whole Foods supermarket past year.
