Man accused of stealing roommate's $10m lottery ticket

Man accused of stealing roommate's $10m lottery ticket

But the ticket turned out to be a victor, and promised to flood his bank account with US$10,000 (NZ$15,000), or so he thought. He then told his two roommates.

Saosongyang was invited to the lottery office to collect his winnings on January 7, "but instead of him celebrating his big win he was arrested by Vacaville PD Detectives", police said.

Confused, the man suspected his winning ticket had been swapped for a dud by one of his roommates and reported the incident to the police.

The roommate, who police identified as 35-year-old Adul Saosongyang, went to collect his winnings on Monday in Sacramento but was instead greeted by Vacaville police officers.

Saosongyang was not able to immediately walk away with the prize money.

When he woke, the roommate took the card to a shop in an attempt to collect his winning but was told that it wasn't a victor.

The following day, the man's roommate, Adul Saosongyang, 35, attempted to turn in the real winning ticket and was informed that the ticket was actually worth $10 million.

In the meantime, the Lottery realised something was afoot when they requested video surveillance footage from Lucky Grocery Store and were told the ticket may have been stolen.

At this point, the Lottery was unaware this ticket had been reported stolen and began their administrative investigation that is done on all winnings over $600.

At this point, lottery authorities didn't know Saosongyang had committed the crime and began the standard investigative process for winners of sums over USA $600.

That was when the Lottery investigator and a Vacaville police detective started comparing notes and collaborating on the theft investigation. Lottery officials then invited Saosongyang to its office under the premise of awarding the prize.

Saosongyang was told he could collect the winnings, but when he arrived he was instead arrested on suspicion of grand theft. They both determined that Saosongyang allegedly purchased a similar lottery ticket and altered it before swapping it with the winning ticket, according to authorities.

"Although, I'm sure everything will work out in the end", he told the newspaper.
