MPs vote to further bind Theresa May's hands on Brexit

MPs vote to further bind Theresa May's hands on Brexit

May's de-facto deputy said it was a delusion to think the government would be able to negotiate a new divorce deal if Parliament voted down hers.

She is pressing ahead with a vote that she looks set to lose, after failing to win over her nominal Northern Irish allies.

The Scottish Secretary argued a second vote on the May Plan would "crystallise" matters in MPs' minds and afford them the "opportunity to reflect and understand the real alternatives: crashing out of the European Union in 80 days' time or stopping Brexit altogether".

"I think he stepped way over the mark out today he's broken with parliamentary precedent".

Opposition to May's deal is spread across the political spectrum, including sections of her own ruling Conservative Party and the 10 Northern Irish Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) MPs her government relies on to command a majority in parliament.

"The threat of a no deal Brexit has [been] cynically used by the government for many months as part of their campaign to bully and intimidate Parliament into voting for a bad deal that would leave us worse off and offers less control", Murray said in a statement on the People's Vote website, adding that Tuesday's events demonstrated that Parliament "can still act decisively".

The EU has ruled out even meeting with UK Brexit negotiators to talk about any changes to the agreement. "There won't be any meeting as such, because negotiations have been completed", a spokesperson for the EU told reporters in Brussels on Monday.

And MPs could then hold non-binding votes on what should happen next.

He told MPs: "There is a question of extension of Article 50 and that may be inevitable now given the position we are in".

The government lost by 11 votes, 308 to 297.

Rebellious Conservative MPs teamed up with opposition party Labour on Wednesday to vote for a motion created to prevent the government delaying key decisions on Brexit.

The House of Commons voted to reduce the time the government has to outline a "plan B" from 21 days to three if, as expected, lawmakers reject the Brexit agreement in a vote on Tuesday.

While a majority of MPs may vote to take a "no deal" Brexit off the table, that would not legally oblige Mrs May's government to do so. "Obviously she has had a lot of important discussions over the Christmas break with other European leaders and I'm sure she would want to update parliament".

It has been suggested that Brexit could be delayed if the deal is defeated in the "meaningful vote" to allow time to renegotiate elements of the deal.

It looks like the government's charm offensive, created to win over the DUP, is dead on arrival. That is why we are taking every opportunity possible in Parliament to prevent no deal.

The DUP's Brexit spokesman Sammy Wilson said: "The only thing which could swing the DUP round is if the backstop as it applies to the United Kingdom as a whole or to Northern Ireland specifically were removed from this agreement".

May has warned that if MPs reject her deal, Britain would still leave the European Union on March 29, with or without any new arrangements. But there is little indication that many MPs have been swayed and the deal is nearly certain to be defeated on Tuesday. Ms.
