Tulsi Gabbard announces she will run for president in 2020

Democratic congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, an Iraq war veteran who met dictator Bashar al-Assad in Syria during that country's devastating civil war, has said that she is launching a United States presidential bid.

The 37-year-old Iraq War veteran is the first Hindu elected to Congress and the first member born in the US territory of American Samoa.

The Hawaiʻi Democrat reportedly disclosed her plans on CNN's "The Van Jones Show", which will air at 2 p.m. Saturday Hawaiʻi time, the network said.

"There are a lot of reasons for me to make this decision", Gabbard told CNN. "There are a lot of challenges that are facing the American people that I'm concerned about and that I want to help solve", she said in an interview that will air on Saturday. "I look forward to being able to get into this and to talk about it in depth when we make our announcement", which will come within the next week, Gabbard said.

Rumors of her run for president have circulated in recent months.

The US senator Elizabeth Warren, of MA, on 31 December announced she had formed an exploratory committee for a presidential run in what is expected to be a crowded Democratic primary field before the November 2020 presidential election.

"I stepped down from the legislature where I served, and headed to a war zone", Gabbard recalled at the 2012 Democratic National Convention. She also noted that the 2003 invasion of Iraq was based on faulty intelligence and said that she wanted to understand the evidence of the Syria attack. She ended up being a backer of Sen. She had already served in the Hawaii House of Representatives. "Sec. Clinton has a record and positions that will take us into a future that will include more interventionist wars of regime change", Gabbard told MSNBC's Rachel Maddow in March 2016. Her 2017 meeting with Syrian dictator Bashar Al-Assad drew widespread criticism.

She said she met with him to show that USA can "truly care about the Syrian people" with the hope of achieving peace. After Donald Trump was elected, she met with the then president-elect to discuss the war in Syria.

The congresswoman also made surprising allies on the right, appearing on Fox News and at events organized by the American Enterprise Institute to criticize the Obama administration's foreign policy in ways that raised some Democratic eyebrows.

Gabbard, 37, is the second woman after Senator Elizabeth Warren to enter the presidential race from the Democratic party.
