White House Responds to Bombshell NYT Trump-Russia Report: 'This Is Absurd'

No evidence has been revealed publicly asserting that Trump had secret contact with or was influenced by Russian government officials, and spokespeople for both the Federal Bureau of Investigation and special counsel's office refused to comment.

The Washington Post reported Wednesday that White House counsel Pat Cipollone is gearing up by hiring 17 new lawyers to the team to prepare to "prevent President Trump's confidential discussions with top advisers from being disclosed to House Democratic investigators and revealed in the special counsel's long-awaited report". But the evidence so far shows a broad range of Trump associates had Russia-related contacts during the 2016 presidential campaign and transition period, and several lied about the communication.

According to the Times report, the inquiry was ultimately handed over to Robert Mueller.

In a phone interview Giuliani, who is a member of Trump's legal team, told the news outlet that the team should be able to check the conclusions of the report, which is now in its 20th month. Trump has repeatedly called the Russian Federation probe a "witch hunt".

"We gave very, very complete answers to a lot of questions that I shouldn't have even been asked, and I think that should solve the problem", President Trump added.

Peter Carr, a spokesman for Mueller, declined to comment. It is unclear what happened to the probe after that.

Mueller is believed to be preparing his final report on the Russian Federation investigation, though there's no timeline on when it will be released.

"The investigation the F.B.I. opened into Mr. Trump also had a criminal aspect, which has always been publicly known: whether his firing of Mr. Comey constituted obstruction of justice".

Just under a year later, Trump tweeted that Comey wasn't fired over the Russian Federation investigation. He also says his now-former lawyer, Cohen, lied to get a lighter sentence in NY.

Former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen was sentenced last month to three years in prison for crimes including orchestrating the payments in violation of campaign finance laws.

If the report is not made public, however, Congress could issue a subpoena to try to force its release.

"It's going to be up to him", President Trump said.

The newspaper said it's not clear whether Mueller is still looking into that matter.
