Amazon's game streaming service set for 2020

Amazon's game streaming service set for 2020

Reports have surfaced that suggest, rather unsurprisingly, an Amazon game streaming service is in the works. Whether the service will actually come to fruition is anyone's guess, but assuming The Information's coverage is accurate, it's hardly an unprecedented move for the online retail giant.

Amazon hasn't confirmed the new gaming service.

The most noteworthy game streaming service that already exists is the underwhelming Playstation Now. But as the wide-open field of game streaming picks up steam, it appears Amazon might see an opportunity to really become a player.

And the number of people who broadcast their video game play, music, commentary and everyday theatrics jumped from 2 million in 2017 to more than 3 million in 2018. Gamers simply access Amazon's servers, from which they are able to stream games to their TV or device. The Information believes that the service could launch sometime next year, and if that's true, we may hear more about it soon. We expect various Twitch features to be wrapped into the service like game video broadcasting and viewing, as well as the Twitch game store and the friends and communications infrastructure.

Two sources told the publication that Amazon was looking to enter the cloud gaming market in 2020. Amazon Prime members could also get a discount for the service. A streaming service would obviate the need for storage space, since everything is rendered remotely; all you'd need is a strong broadband connection and a modest amount of cache space. Microsoft, for example, unveiled its video game streaming service Project xCloud back in October, touting it as bringing games to devices including PCs and consoles.

Streaming services have always been cited as part of gaming's future, initially alongside standalone consoles, earning vocal support from the likes of Rockstar and EA.

Amazon has yet to confirm any news, and no release date or pricing has been announced.
