Bungie ends their partnership with Activision, keeps the rights to Destiny

In one of the most unexpected moves in quite some time, Bungie announced that it will be exclusively publishing the Destiny franchise after splitting with Activision.

Destiny 2 players on PC will also be able to breath easy with Blizzard announcing that the title will continue to receive full support on BattleNet and players won't notice any disruption in their service or gameplay. Bungie struck gold with the game after creating Halo for Microsoft. The team also announced that plans for the separation are already under way and that both teams are dedicated to making sure the fans aren't hurt by the transitional process.

Now today we've got a good indication of what Wall Street thinks of a Bungie-less Activision Blizzard (NASDAQ:ATVI).

While the announcement may have come as a surprise to some, this was probably inevitable, given the tensions that developed following the release of Destiny 2 and the Forsaken expansion. If there's less players around, then there's fewer people buying microtransactions and DLCs like the recent Foresaken expansion - and as we've covered in previous videos, Activision more than any other publisher thrives off these in-game purchases.

In a blog post Thursday, Bungie said it'll take over publishing for Destiny and its sequels in the future, ending a nine-year partnership. "Activision and Bungie are committed to a seamless transition for the Destiny franchise and will continue to work closely together during the transition on behalf of the community of Destiny players around the world". Rest assured there is more of that on the way... Bungie further stated, "With our remarkable Destiny community, we are ready to publish on our own, while Activision will increase their focus on owned IP projects". Our success is owed in no small part to the incredible community of players who have graced our worlds with light and life. He tweeted in response to Bungie's announcement: "Looking forward to a very bright future working with one of my favorite independent studios on one of my favorite franchises". Here's to you, to us, and to all of the adventures that await in 2019.
