Bus driver honored for rescuing baby left alone on highway

"Thank you, Irena and all members of the MCTS team, for your compassion, commitment to the community, and MCTS Excellence", MCTS officials said via a statement given to WISN-TV.

The video also shows Ivic, driving her bus as normal, then suddenly stopping it, as she spots the child wandering close to the road. While waiting for law enforcement to arrive on the scene, another passenger offers her coat to the baby.

A passenger on the bus took off her winter coat and draped it around the baby girl, who was cold to the touch.

The Milwaukee County Transit System says an alert bus driver rescued a young child found wandering barefoot on a freeway overpass in frigid temperatures. "I have my children too", Ivic said. Kasim told the station he believes his wife, who he said has a mental illness, took the baby to a church across the freeway and later forgot about her. When he saw the police gathered near his home, and noticed his daughter was not there, he ran outside. The child, less than a year old, was reunited with its father.

Milwaukee police told FOX6 News no charges were filed in this case.

On Thursday, Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele honored Ivic for her heroic actions. I'm shaking, ' she says.

This is the ninth lost or missing child found by MCTS Drivers in recent years. "And if I find myself in the same situation again, I will, of course, help again". She has worked for the MCTS for five years. This post has been updated.
