Julian Castro, Former Housing Secretary, Announces 2020 Presidential Bid

Julian Castro, Former Housing Secretary, Announces 2020 Presidential Bid

Another Democrat has thrown his hat into the ring for the 2020 Presidential race.

Former San Antonio Mayor and Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro waves as he arrives with his family to an event where he announced his decision to seek the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination, January 12, 2019, in San Antonio.

The grandson of an immigrant from Mexico, Castro said his grandmother could have never imagined that two generations later one son would be a member of Congress and another would be standing before the crowd to say, "I am a candidate for the president of the United States of America".

Castro, 44, will face a crowded field packed with powerhouse names.

"She taught my brother and me that if you want to make a change in your life, in your community, you don't wait, you work", Julián Castro said of his mother in the video.

That might be true if you're only considering the constellation of Democrats who are officially in the running already. John Delaney, a former congressman from Maryland, launched his presidential bid in 2017, and Sen.

In his convention speech Castro highlighted "an unlikely journey" that he has lived, including growing up with twin brother Joaquin, who is a United States congressman.

Another Democrat, 37-year-old Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii - a lifelong surfer - announced Friday that she too will seek the party's presidential nomination. If successful, he would be the first Hispanic and one of the youngest Americans to win the White House.

Since announcing formation of an exploratory committee in December, Mr Castro has begun to stake out positions on policy debates that will dominate the nominating contests that kick off early next year.

"Going forward", Castro said, America "must be the smartest, the fairest, the healthiest and the most prosperous nation on earth".

He might not even be the frontrunner in his home state, which became immersed with Betomania in 2018 when Democratic Rep. Beto O'Rourke ran a solid campaign for U.S. Senator against Republican incumbent Ted Cruz. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., and Sen. Diana Delrosario, a social worker in San Antonio, warned she might cry while she recounted how Castro once went out of his way as mayor to help wheel her mother out of a restaurant.

He was raised by a local Latina activist, and after a brief career in law, was elected mayor of the nation's seventh-largest city at 34.

The then-mayor rose to national prominence in 2012 when he was selected to give the keynote address at the Democratic National Convention.

As Fox News noted, Castro is running on a progressive platform that includes universal health care and affordable housing. Obama picked him to be housing secretary in 2014.

But Castro told CNN that he believes he can perform well in Iowa and is backing that confidence up, according to a source with knowledge of Castro's operation, by naming Derek Eadon, the former chairman of the Iowa Democratic Party, to a senior role on his nascent campaign.

He was on the short list of Hillary Clinton's potential running mates in 2016. He also said he doesn't plan to accept any PAC money for his campaign.
