Republicans slam Rep. King for what they call racist remarks

In a New York Times article on King's penchant for spouting demonizing rhetoric about immigrants, King himself told the newspaper that he doesn't understand when "that language" became "offensive".

King did champion Western civilization, which he referenced in his initial comments to the Times.

Hawaii Democratic Sen. Brian Schatz quipped, "The main thing is that Steve King does not use profanity and that is what matters in the end" - an apparent reference to the backlash surrounding freshman Rep. Rashida Tlaib, a Michigan Democrat, for calling President Donald Trump a "motherf*****".

Steve King questioned how terms like "white nationalist" and "white supremacist" have become racist - comments that prompted stinging rebukes from his fellow Republicans and even a primary challenger. America's values are expressed in our founding documents, they are attainable by everyone and we take pride that people of all races, religions, and creeds from around the globe aspire to achieve them.

The Iowa Congressman clearly holds and regularly espouses bigoted, racist, and anti-LGBT views. But already, one Republican Congressman is making life hard.

But King said his conviction "does not make me a white nationalist or a white supremacist".

A bipartisan chorus of King's colleagues condemned the language he used in the nation's largest daily newspaper.

"Congressman Steve King's recent comments, actions, and retweets are completely inappropriate", tweeted Ohio Rep. Steve Stivers, then the chairman of the National Republican Campaign Committee.

Rep. Justin Amash (R-Mich.) in a tweet called out King's "embrace of racism" and said it "has no place in Congress or anywhere". "These remarks should also be repudiated by Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy and all of Rep. King's colleagues", Ryan wrote on Twitter.

Randy Feenstra, a Republican state senator, announced Wednesday that he plans to run against King in 2020.

Additionally, while King's statement Thursday afternoon appears to distinguish a support for Western civilization from a belief in white supremacy, he seemed to lump those ideas together in his quote in the Times.
