Trump denies hiding detail of Putin summit talks from staff

A White House spokesman disputed that characterisation and said that the Trump administration has sought to "improve the relationship with Russia" after the Obama administration "pursued a flawed "reset" policy that sought engagement for the sake of engagement".

The New York Times said FBI officials became suspicious of Mr Trump's ties to Russian Federation during the 2016 presidential campaign but held off on opening an investigation until Mr Trump tied his dismissal of Mr Comey to a probe into allegations of election meddling by Russian Federation. They also sought to determine whether Trump was deliberately working for Russian Federation or had unintentionally been influenced by Moscow.

The FBI investigation was later folded into the broader probe by Special Counsel Robert Mueller into Russia's meddling in the 2016 election and possible collaboration by the Trump campaign.

Trump responded: "I think it's the most insulting thing I've ever been asked.the most insulting article I've ever had written & if you read the article, you'd see that they found absolutely nothing".

US President Donald Trump (right) meets with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the G-20 Summit in Hamburg, July 7, 2017.

The Washington Post said that it remained unclear whether Trump took away the recordings of translators in other cases, however, according to officials, they did not manage to get a reliable report on the two-hour meeting of the two presidents in Helsinki.

Trump allies say that the president may have a desire for secrecy due to embarrassing leaks earlier in his presidency, and to not have subordinates obstruct his ability to build rapport with Putin, the Post writes.

In the past United States presidents have made great effort to have their meetings with Russian leaders well documented, to allow top diplomats and security officials to study what was said and possible implications.

Trump also tried to defend his actions with Russian Federation, saying, "I've been tougher on Russian Federation than anybody else - any other - probably any other president, period, but certainly the last three or four presidents".

Asked in a late Saturday interview with Fox News whether he had ever worked for Russia, Trump replied: "I think it's the most insulting thing I've ever been asked..."

Mr Trump's relations with Russian Federation before his election in 2016 are the subject of an ongoing federal investigation.

President Donald Trump has blasted the notion that he is a secret agent for Russian Federation, following a report that the FBI had investigated that possibility in 2017.

The US President has been accused of going to extraordinary lengths to hide details of his meetings with his Russian counterpart, including on at least one occasion seizing the notes of his own interpreter.

Trump added that the Times was a disaster as a newspaper.

"I call him "Lying James Comey" - he did a awful job as Federal Bureau of Investigation director", Trump told Pirro.

The inquiry forced counterintelligence investigators to evaluate whether Trump was a potential threat to national security.

"It's called the "Failing New York Times" for a reason", he railed before turning his ire to Comey.

His former personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, has been sentenced to three years in prison for multiple crimes, including felony violations of campaign finance laws that prosecutors allege were carried out under Trump's direction.
