Windows 10: Microsoft reserves extra disk space on your PC

Windows 10: Microsoft reserves extra disk space on your PC

Microsoft explains that you can reduce the size of reserved storage by reducing the number of Optional Features and languages you have installed. This is because of the fact that you might have to install a particular update that is coming your way, an update that would make it necessary for you to look into deleting unnecessary files and cleaning up disk space so that the update has a place where it can be installed. Microsoft will be highlighting more options for that later on towards the final release.

The latest Windows 10 Insider build, number 18312, introduces a new feature wherein the operating system reserves a big old chunk of disk space, effectively expanding its on-disk footprint by another 7GB. "With reserved storage, updates, apps, temporary files, and caches are less likely to take away from valuable free space and should continue to operate as expected".

Availability of Reserved Storage Feature Current Windows 10 users will only get the Reserved Storage feature if their systems get "clean installed" to Windows 10 version 1903.

The change was reverted the following day, but systems will remain affected until administrators remove an earlier update, KB971033.

Microsoft will reserve 7GB of storage space for this objective, although this figure will vary in the future.

There are no specifics as to what's changed in cumulative update KB4476976, as Microsoft hasn't published a changelog just yet, but we expect more information to make the rounds once the public rollout begins. The reserved space isn't entirely lost during normal usage, with certain temporary files having their disk usage charged against reserved space rather than free space. As a result of this fact you are probably going to feel a little constricted by this new update, although most people are probably going to appreciate the time that Microsoft will be saving them thanks to the 7 Gigabytes that has been set aside.

"Since disk space has been set aside for this objective, your device will function more reliably".
