HBO reveals 'Game of Thrones' final season air date

A new trailer has some fresh footage of the Stark children navigating the crypts of Winterfell - surely a stylistic teaser rather than an actual sequence from the show - that closes out with the premiere date: 14 April. No more split-second snippets, this is the real deal.

As Jon, Arya, and Sansa are walking through the crypt, we hear from some of those no longer with us, and the teaser ends with the three characters arriving at statues of themselves, as darkness and ice threaten to consume them.

They gaze upon the statues that will one day immortalise them, as they did their father Ned, mother Catelyn and aunt Lyanna, Jon's real mother.

As they stop at the end of the tunnel, they are faced with three statues that look almost identical to them.

In the final seconds of the grimmest teaser so far, frost descends, extinguishing the torch in Jon's hand, which gives an inkling of an icy fate beneath Winterfell.

True Detective season 3 premieres at 9 p.m. EST on HBO on Sunday night, January 13.

However, we won't know what's in store for the Starks-as well as the villains we love to hate like Cersei Lannister-until this spring, when HBO releases the final episodes in this story, for now. And although the flagship series is ending, the network has multiple projects set in the Game of Thrones universe now in development.

It also included a quick teaser from the upcoming show, which fans have no doubt been eagerly awaiting. The six-episode season will begin on April 14, 2019, so if there is no break during the season, the series finale will air sometime in May.

HBO has finally announced the premiere date for the final season of Game of Thrones. Hoping this third installment is more like the fantastic first season. I wouldn't do it for any other show, don't get me wrong, but it's Thrones, so in order to avoid spoilers I want to see it at the same time it hits the US East Coast.
