Trump White House sought strike plans against Iran

An unnamed "former senior USA administration official" said the request "definitely rattled people".

Although the Pentagon obeyed the request by the council, the Journal reported, it is unknown whether or not the plans for striking Iran were ever fully developed or even provided to the White House. "People were shocked. It was mind-boggling how cavalier they were about hitting Iran".

Last year, Bolton quickly pulled the US out of the nuclear-containment deal brokered during the Obama administration and tightened economic sanctions against Iran - moves that were championed on the campaign trail in 2016 by then-candidate Trump.

It is not known if Trump knew about the request made to the Pentagon.

The request from the council, which is led by national security adviser John Bolton, came after an attack in September on the US Embassy in Baghdad by a militant group aligned with Iran, according to the Journal.

The explosives reportedly landed in an abandoned lot adjacent to U.S. Embassy and resulted in no casualties, the Journal reported, adding that he Basra attacks did not affect the consulate operations.

As a think-tank scholar and Fox News commentator, Mr. Bolton repeatedly urged the U.S.to attack Iran, including in a 2015 New York Times op-ed titled, "To stop Iran's bomb, bomb Iran".

Official White House policy does not call for regime change in Iran, and Bolton has said he would implement the President's agenda.

State Department Secretary Mike Pompeo did not comment on the story when asked about it by reporters and a State Department spokeswoman declined to comment.

Garrett Marquis, speaking for the National Security Council responded to the report by stating it 'coordinates policy and provides the president with options to anticipate and respond to a variety of threats'.

Citing the lack of casualties and limited damage that resulted from the September 6 mortar attack, the US officials whom the Journal spoke to said Bolton's request for a far-reaching military response was jarring.

The agreement was aimed at preventing Iran developing nuclear weapons.
